info on adoption 16 May 97 i would like to find out some info. i married a woman and she had a 4 yr old son, he never really knew his real father, he left when he was 6 months old. he's 15 now. we went to court and terminated the fathers perental rights.and i would like to find out, if i was to adopte him what kind of adpotion is that called. and to do so do i HAVE to go through a lawyer or can i submit some paperwork with the courts and pay a fee. the lawyer wants $250 and i really would like to adopt my step son whom i've been his dad for 9 years now. any information would be apreciated thank you very much

Response:
Hi and thanks for your question. $250 is a very reasonable fee to do this adoption! Many attorneys want 10 times that amount. It is possible to do it on your own, but your attorney is a better way to go.

MY WIFE AND I HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR GOING ON A YEAR NOW. WE NOW HAVE THREE KIDS ALL TOGETHER. WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS CAN I ADOPT MY STEPSON WITHOUT CONSULTING THE FATHER, SINCE THE FATHER IS IN PRISON. WE NOW LIVE IN GEORGIA AND THE FATHER IS IN PRISON IN VIRGINIA.

Hi and thanks for your question. My understanding is that you need the OK of the father, but you should check with an attorney...this is a legal question. See the following http://www.adopting.org/georgia.html near the bottom of the page for a list of attorneys near you.

Adoption 15 May 1997
Q: If mothers put their child up for odoption should she be able to get the child back???
Paul Eggenberger
eggenber@sonoma.edu

Any feedback?

Response:
Tue, 20 May 1997
I think that depends on the situation. If she has milked the adoptive parents for a bunch of money while she is pregnant, at the very least she should be required to pay it back in full. If the child is in it's new home and well-treated and everyone is adjusted, no. If she thinks prior to birth she wants to give her child up, but recieves no moneys then after birthing decides she wants to keep it, then, yes she should be able to. Just my opinion, Cris--

In my opinion as a future adopting parent, I feel once the mother has made the decision to put her child in the arms of a loving couple or individual who can offer that child a stable and secure environment, she has terminated her rights to take that child back. I feel it is very important to have some contact with the birthmother or birthparents so that this can be avoided. A birthmother or birthparents who choose not to have any contact with the adopting parents during the childs life, and then wants the child back, has already proved that their interest in the child is limited!!!!! Response welcomed!!!!!!!!!

Can we adopt? 15 May 97
In 1991 I was arrested and sent to prison. I went through very intensive drug and alcohol treatment. my wife and i are interested in adopting, but I don't know if it is possible with me being an ex-con even though my crime was not sex related. Could you please reply if we can by any chance adopt since my wife can't have children.

Response:
This varies...but usually, I am told, you need to be clean and sober for more than 4 years...Most states have procedures for "waiving" past convictions. It all depends on the amount of time that has passed, the nature and circumstances of the crime, and references showing rehabilitation (which can be from long-time friends, business associates, ministers, judges, teachers etc.). If the person is no longer living a life of crime, and seems very unlikely to do so again, then it's usually OK. What is very important is to tell the whole truth about the circumstances of the offense. Records often contain all sorts of details that one might not expect. With international adoption families are dependent on the views of the foreign government, which often are not so forgiving.

How can I Adopt? 14 May 1997
I WAS WONDERING WHAT WERE THE CHANCES OF PEOPLE WHO DON'T HAVE A LOT OF MONEY AND REALLY WON'TS A BABY . HOW WOULD I GO ABOUT TRYING TO ADOPT A CHILD..PENNIES@webtv.net (TAMMY DAVIS)

Response:
There are many children waiting for homes. Your best bet is to either become a foster parent and/or become part of a fost-adopt program. There are siblings available in almost every county of the USA. Check with your local county adoption agency. They are usually listed in the government pages of your phone directory, often under Dept of Social Services, Dept of Child and Family or Department of Human Services.
Check our Frequently Asked Questions for other ideas on adopting with little money.

Adoption in the U.S. 14 May 1997
We would love to adopt a baby, but how can we be sure that the birthparents won't come back for the child as in baby Jessica and Richard. It would break my heart and my husbands to give up a child we have loved and nurtured as our own.. We have thought about adopting outside the U.S. for this reason.
LadyAnn444@aol.com

Response:
There is no way to be 100 percent sure a birthparent will not change his/her mind. It probably happens more often than people care to admit, but there are almost always warning signs which people have chosen to ignore. However, the baby Jessica and baby Richard cases account for less than 1% of adoptions and are cases where, for whatever the reason, there were problems from the beginning. Sometimes, it is a case of a birthfather not being notified, sometimes it is a case where a birthmother witholds information or deliberately deceives a birthfather, sometimes it is a case where there is Native American ancestry involved.
However, there is a way to make sure you don't lose your life's savings--get adoption cancellation insurance.

adoption 14 May 97
Is it possible to adopt a baby from the Phillipines that is going to be left in an ophanage if not taken and can this be planned in advance of the birth with consent by all parties with the adoptive parent being American citizens and residents and the birth mother being Filipina with no idea who the birth father is?

Response:
You need a legal opinion on this. Email some of the attorneys on our site, or you can also look on our USA Resources Pages and find an attorney or agency near your home who can advise you.

Meeting birthmom 14 May 97
My husband and I have recently found an unborn baby to adopt. We will be meeting the birth parents for the first time in two days. Needless to say, We are very nervous...... Are there a list of questions or a particular way to go about this whole meeting? Do I need to contact an attorney now? When should I get the attorney involved?
WOODM @ MAIL< firn> EDU

Response:
Check out the following article about meeting your birthmother: Also, besides bringing pictures with you, ask your birthmom what is most important to her about raising a child, what are her values, what goals she has for her life, as well as the basics of who the birth father is, what is his involvement, is he in agreement with the adoption, what kind of adoption she wants--what kind of involvement, if any, she will want in the way of pictures/visits,etc. It would not hurt to look into attorney or agency involvement now. You don't mention your state. Where are you?

question on adoption 13 May 1997
I am a single 28 year old woman who volunteers for twin 4 year old boys. I am interested in adopting the twins. I do not have alot of money however I do make a good living and I feel that I could provide for these child. The boys have been living in a foster home for the past year. The foster parents have been asked to adopt the boys however the foster parents do not want to. I know that the boys need a stable, loving and permanent environment. Please tell me, in your opinion, where I should start.
Melissa (Mb4500)

Response:
You need to contact the county foster system--the boys should have a social worker. Find out her/his name from the foster family and call her and let her know you'd like to adopt.

subdidized adoption 13 May 97
Hi! We just adopted a lttle boy in February who just happened t o be subdidized. It was a great added benefit for us to have all of the financial aid the state provided. We live in TN but I am sure it is the same everywhere. Our son is black (and we are not) and he did testpositive for cocaine at birth and because of those two factors, they consider him to be at the bottom of te barrel, so to speak , for desired children. This is humorous to me since ittakes us twice as long to walk through a store now because so many people stop and tell us how cute he is and how happy he is and how healthy he is--sometimes these people really crack us up when we think of hw hard the state tried t talk us out of taking him. He is practically perfect in every way. We were not out to seek a subsdized adoption and we really dn't think of ourselves as doing anything out ofthe ordinary by taking him, but I know here they would be elated to find someone who wants to take these children. I would love to talk to you more and if you would like to e-mail me, you can at FREDDEB@webtv.net Good Luck!
Adoption of Twins 13 May 97
My husband and I are unable to conceive, so it seemed so natural to look to the adoption option. The only thing is I have had a desire to have twins since I was 10 years of age. I just figured with that type of desire I was probably meant to some day give birth. 19 years later, I was forced (for health reasons) to have surgery. Now I ask, is there any hope for my desire to come true. My husband & I are both willing & wanting to adopt multiples (twins or triplets)We would pre- fer to have them from infancy. Most people tell me I am crazy to wish this type of "torture" on us, but I believe it would be twice or even triple the blessing as having one. So I guess this is the long way around asking, is this so rare an occurance that I should just be expecting a miracle, or does this type of adoption happen fairly regularly?

In general it is not common to my understanding, but it would not hurt to pursue both. You might have an easier time looking for multiples by doing a special needs or international adoption.

I adopted twins 15 May 97
We adopted twin boys from Russia four years ago. They are now 6 years old, in Kindergraten and doing fine. They are very active and people always come up to me and say double trouble. I say no, double blessings. I don't believe they are more work, just different problems. We never have to say, he can do that because he is older. You will be able to in a few years. No younger child getting in an older childs possesions. No worry about a younger child swallowing the legos.

We did not plan on adopting twins. We wanted two children, but thought we'd try one at a time. When we went to pick up our child in Russia, there in the next crib was his twin. We had to fight to take them both. We couldn't bear the thought of twins being split up. I ended spending six continuous weeks in Russia.

I have heard of many twin adoptions since then, all but one the children have been 2 years old or older. One local woman adopted twins from an agency. She put in her home study that she prefer twins. The birth mother picked her because of this.

Response: 14 May 97
Hi I saw your note on the net and thought I'd share what we've found. We live in Tucson and there is an adoption agency here called Commonwealth Adoptions International, Inc. Address 4001 E. Fort Lowell Suite 200, Tucson, Az 85712. As with you, we despirately want twins or trips. The differences is we already have two children 22 and 17 Empty nest is setting in and we want to fill it up again. We were told by this agency there were at least 3 sets of 3 year old Russian boys ready to adopt. if you don't mind toddlersThe cost right now is prohibitive to us 22,000 for both. If that's not a problem for you then try them . They are very nice and appear to have a high quality agency.. Their E-mail is caii@primenet.com ..I wish you well. Please let me know how things work out for you or jsut to talk. Im at acts3@aol.com

single parent adoptions 13 May 97
I am a 28 year old, african american, separated, possibly infertile woman seeking advice on adopting a a child no older than 2yrs old. I was told by one agency to get a legal separation or divorce or I wouldn't be able to adopt at all, is that true? I have been separated for four years and I live in beautiful studio apartment. I never had a problem with being separated, my husband and I are actually very good friends. I do have a problem with starting adoption procedures while living in a studio, is that a problem?

I was told by one city or state agency that making a big salary is not that important, but is it a plus? I mean if I have the two above strikes against me would having financial potential work in my favor?

I would like to adopt as soon as possible what's my first step?
ASimm345@aol.com

The easiest way to get started is to contact your local county adoption agency. These are usually listed in the government pages of your local phone directory. What state do you live in?
Also see our information about singles adopting . You do not need a large income, but my understanding is that the child does need a bedroom.
Anyone with information, please let us know.

Russian or Georgian adoption 12 May 97

Question about Russian adoption... 13 May 97
How much more is it to adopt a sibling group as compared to a single child?
We figure that the travel is going to be about the same as for a single child, but what about agency fees, legal fees, etc? randyto@worldnet.att.net

Response:
There is usually an extra charge for siblings or additional children, but not usually as much as the first child....however, this varies from agency to agency...so you need to ask each one what their policy is.

Birthmother Search 12 May 97
We would like to begin a search for a birth mother. Where do we begin. My husband and I are ready to adopt a child and really don't know where to start.

Response:
See our article Article about Networking to find a birthmother
Write your dear birth mother letter.... and you can put it on the internet...

Can we adopt? 11 May 1995
MY QUESTION IS WHAT ARE THE GENERAL CRITERIA TO ADOPT A CHILD AND OR A SIBLING GROUP. WE ARE NOT EXTREMELY WELL TO DO BUT MY HUSBAND DOES WORK FOR FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND I STAY AT HOME AND DO CHILD CARE FOR MY COUSIN'S TO KIDS BOTH BOYS 1 AND 6. I, KARRIE AM 24 GOING TO BE 25 THIS YEAR . MY HUSBAND MICHAEL IS 27 GOING TO BE 28 IN ONE MONTH WE HAVE BEEN MARRIED IN A STABLE RELATIONSHIP FOR 2 AND A HALF YEARS. WE HAVE BEEN TOGETHER 6 YEARS AND HAVE TRIED WITH NO LUCK FOR 3 YEARS. MY MAIN QUESTION IS DO WE FIT THE STANDARD CRITERIA FOR YOUR ADOPTION AGENCY? OR IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE WE NEED TO DO OR DO WE NEED TO BRING HOME SO MUCH MONEY A YEAR TO BE ABLE TO SHOW SUPPORT OR DO WE HAVE TO OWN A HOME , BECAUSE RIGHT NOW WE LIVE IN AN APARTMENT IN HAZEL PARK. WE BOTH HAD NOT FINISHED HIGH SCHOOL EVEN THOUGH WE BOTH FIND THAT SCHOOL IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT , BUT WE BOTH DID HOWEVER RECIEVE ARE GED'S AND I HAVE GONE ON TO TAKE COLLEGE CLASSES ON A PART-TIME BASIS. WE HOPE SOMEDAY TO SHARE OUR LIVES AND ARE JOY WITH A CHILD OF ANY RACE AND OF ANY AGE.
THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR YOUR RESPONSE.

Yes, you can do an adoption....I would recommend you start out by qualifying as foster parents...then go into the fost-adopt program which most states have. What is your state?
Also see the following:
To get started check out the following:
Getting Started
What is a Homestudy
Then check out some of the resources on our main page.
This should get you started. Once you've decided what kind of adoption you want, you will need to choose an agency or attorney to help. In addition to the ones listed on our main page, see our state by state listing of what's available to you.

The easiest way to adopt a sibling group or a special needs child is to call your local adoption agency which is usually located in the government pages either in the front or back of your phone directory or sometimes in the yellow pages, too--sometimes listed under Dept of Human Services or Dept of Social Services or Dept of Child and Family. You should also be eligible to receive a subsidy for these kinds of adoptions

subsidized adoption 11 May 1997
My name is Maureen Foster and I just got on-line yesterday. I'm anxious to find out if the state of Florida has a site on the internet or www where they post information on special needs kids that are up for adoption. I live in Citrus County and am currently working through the Marion County Adoption services. I've already had my home-study and I'm interested in finding out more about what children are available for adoption. Also, is it possible to do a special needs subsidized adoption with other states? I have worked with the mentally challenged for several years now and I'm interested in adopting a child that has special needs, such as Down's Syndrome or Cerebral Palsy. My e-mail address is
fostrfam@citrus.infi.net.

Response:
Yes the state of Florida has a wonderful site.

Grants and Funding for adoption
11 May 1997 Are there an grants or funding provided for adoption? Also what is the average price for a homestudy?
j_dixon@mail.conknet.com

Response:
There is not much in the way of help for adoptions other than subsidies for special needs adoptions and the new tax break for adoptions. Also some employers will help with adoptions.
The average price for a homestudy is about $1200-$1500, I think, but if someone has better information, please let me know.

Ethopian Adoption 10 May 1997
We are considering adopting at least two children from Ethopia, and are thinking about using the African Cradle agency. We are interested in 1) hearing about someone's experience with that agency and 2) any information on the children coming from that region for example: medical concerns, emotional and mental health issues and any other helpful information that an adoptive family could share. Thank you!
Dawn & Rick
(midnight@agn.net)

Can someone help with this?
