On November 30 1998, I gave birth to a beautiful little girl named Emily. By my choosing, I also became a Birthmother three days later. Not only am I a Birthmother; I am also Mom to my son, Isaiah. I have been on both sides, placement and parenting, and do not regret either choice.
I chose a very open adoption, with visitation, and it is
going quite well. I am a strong advocate for openness, and feel open adoption education is imperative for all considering adoption as an option. I believe a woman considering adoption has a right to know all that the choice before her entails, as well as her options other than adoption. Then and only then, can she make a sound and informed choice.
I believe there can be healing after the adoption
choice. By God's hand there can be beauty for ashes and an oil of joy instead of despair. I am passionate about the issues Birthmothers are faced
with, but also other issues affecting women such as: father/daughter relationships;
eating disorders; co-dependant relationships; single parenting; and crisis pregnancy.
Currently, I am attending Youngstown State University. Next year, however, I will be transfering to Geneva - a Christian-based college where I will be working for an Associate in Social Work; followed by a Masters in the Science of Organizational Leadership.
My work can be found can be found on various adoption-related websites. As well as books and newsletters. I hope to have my first book out for the public Summer 2003. I am the founder/manager for an online Christian support community for both Birthmothers and Adoptive Mothers called 'Two Different Kinds of Love'. I am also the founder of 'Beauty for Ashes' - a Birthmother ministry/support group which is in it's beginning stages. I hope to have it up and running in the Western Pa area by summer 2003.
If you are a Birthmother who is struggling with all the emotions you are dealing with after placement; an Adoptive Parent who has questions about how to improve the relationship with their child's Birthmother; or anyone else touched by adoption - feel free to email me at: Lifemother@earthlink.net
It is a blessing to be here at Adopting.org to form friendships and supportive ties with those touched by adoption. After I placed my daughter, Adopting.org was one of the first places in which I found support as a Birthmother. I am honored to be in the position to share my work as well as offer assistance to those who now stand where I once stood; as well as learn from those who walk a path different from my own.
