The course is modeled after one already completed five times in the Southern California area. This course will be held in Santa Ana. The full value of the course is attained by attending all eight meetings.
SESSION I and II Feb 6 & March 12, 2000
Sessions I and II will address the life long issues of adoption and their clinical implications across the generations. The many divergent issues complicating adoption practice today will also be addressed. Using an intergenerational template, we will look at all sides of the triad as well as
transracial/transcultural adoptions; adoptions by gay and lesbian couples; and relative placements.
SESSION III and IVApril 9 and May 7, 2000
Sessions III and IV will focus specifically on the adopted person. We will examine bonding and attachment; planning for successful movement for children from home to home; the child's developmental understanding of adoption; special needs adoptees; the adoptee in search and reunion; adoptees as parents; and adoptees in therapy with a special focus on expanding our therapeutic tools.
SESSION V and VI June 4 and July 9, 2000
Sessions V and VI will focus on the birth family. We will examine crisis pregnancy as it affects adolescents vs. more mature couples. What are the elements of ethical counseling?; a look at the birth family system; grief and healing work; birthparents over time; the special concerns of the birth
father; search and reunion issues.
SESSION VII August 6, 2000
Session VII will focus on the adoptive family; issues of infertility; readiness to adopt; bonding and attachment; normal adoptive family development; adoptive families in therapy; open adoptions; and search and reunion will be examined.
SESSION VIII September 10, 2000
Session VIII will weave the tapestry we have created together. We will examine the use of rituals and ceremonies in adoption triad life transitions.
