8 Sessions for Mental Health Professionals

Sharon Kaplan Roszia and Deborah Silverstein, LCSW are gathering a group of professionals who provide services that touch the lives of adoptive families, adoptees and birth families. We are offering an eight month training to be held once a month on a Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a one hour lunch break. The cost is $65.00 per person for a total of $520.00 if paid in advance. For individuals who choose to pay by the session, the cost is $80.00 per monthly meeting.

The course is modeled after one already completed twice in Los Angeles, twice in Orange County and once in San Diego.

SESSION I and II
Sessions I and II will address the life long issues of adoption and their clinical implications across the generations. The many divergent issues complicating adoption practice today will also be addressed. Using an intergenerational template, we will look at all sides of the triad as well as
transracial/transcultural adoptions; adoptions by gay and lesbian couples; and relative placements.

SESSION III and IV
Sessions III and IV will focus specifically on the adopted person. We will examine bonding and attachment; planning for successful movement for children from home to home; the child's developmental understanding of adoption; special needs adoptees; the adoptee in search and reunion; adoptees as parents; and adoptees in therapy with a special focus on expanding our therapeutic tools.

SESSION V and VI
Sessions V and VI will focus on the birth family. We will examine crisis pregnancy as it affects adolescents vs. more mature couples. What are the elements of ethical counseling?; a look at the birth family system; grief and healing work; birthparents over time; the special concerns of the birth
father; search and reunion issues.

SESSION VII
Session VII will focus on the adoptive family; issues of infertility; readiness to adopt; bonding and attachment; normal adoptive family development; adoptive families in therapy; open adoptions; and search and reunion will be examined.

SESSION VIII
Session VIII will weave the tapestry we have created together. We will examine the use of rituals and ceremonies in adoption triad life transitions.
A thorough examination of both local and national resources will be offered.
