Global adoption, or international adoption, is the placement of a child from a country outside of the U.S. with adoptive parents. China, Ethiopia and Russia were the leaders in global adoption in 2010, according to the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
To adopt internationally, a couple will need to travel to the child's country of origin to bring him or her home. These children are either living in orphanages or with foster families and come into adoption due to poverty, social unrest or the devastation of natural disasters. Global adoption is expensive, particularly due to travel fees, and also time consuming. Filing the paperwork required to adopt a child from another country costs at least $1,000 and can delay an adoption if done incorrectly. International adoptions will also require a philanthropic donation to help the agency or orphanage from which the child was adopted. These can be a few thousand dollars. Agencies may require an adopter to spend a certain amount of time in the country so as to familiarize the couple with the child's heritage, traditions and culture.
Adopting overseas is a great alternative for nontraditional adopters, such as unmarried individuals or older couples and individuals. These adopters may be placed with a child with special needs or with an older child. The adoption of older children from another country will require extra tutoring in English if they are learning it as a second language.
