My name is Sabrina Betts and I am trying to organize a maternity home in my state (NC). Aside from licensure and certifications, I am at a loss for wher to begin. I am hoping to find individuals who can help me with program development. My primary mission is to save babies - giving homeless expectant mothers a safe home, but also with structure, expectations, guidance etc. Any information, recommendations are greatly appreciated.

What kind of structure, expectations and guidance?

I personally view maternity homes as a step back in history. What kind of services are you wanting to provide expectant mothers? What would happen to them once they gave birth? And most importantly where would the funding come from?

I am interested in starting a Maternity Home here and also need some guidance as to how to do so. What licenses and certifications are needed, developing a program, structure of a home, and any funding help to start up the home. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I really have no idea what is required or entailed in setting up a maternity home.

I would contact your state's social services dept. though and start there. They will have the forms, legal aspects and guidelines that you would have to follow in order to establish this home.

You might also consider googling "maternity homes" and contacting some of those homes to see how they went about it, how they run it, how to use services from the state etc.

I would strongly urge you find info on counselling for expectant mothers as well, making sure that you would have a staff looking out for their best interests and not just pushing them to place their child for adoption. Meaning, I hope your place will offer parenting classes, where to find parenting support services and be able to explore all options available to them.
