Introducing BreakThrough Adopting.org is Proud to Present:

Uniting and Nurturing the Hearts and Spirits of those whose lives are touched by adoption, through education, support, community outreach, and positive action.

BreakThrough, the vision, began over 10 years ago. I just didn't know it. As I look back, I slowly find subtle hints of its existence.

BreakThrough took its first breath just shortly after my first-born son's. With the adoption caseworker and my family waiting outside my hospital room, I placed my newborn son on the bed and knelt beside him.

My body, still weak from labor, shook uncontrollably against the weight of making a choice. In a moment of complete clarity, I realized, I could not possibly decide. And so I did the only thing I knew to do that day. I gently lifted my son up from the bed, held him into the air, and surrendered him to God. Putting my son and my decision in God's Hands was the only way I could ensure that the "right" choice was made.

Many birth mothers talk of a "sense of peace" that they experience. I believe in that peace. On that day I also prayed this:

"Father, I don't know what to do. But I know that you have a plan. Just help me find peace in relinquishing my son and I can do it." Immediately that day I felt at peace for the first time, though the choice was nearly impossible to accept. I clung to my baby boy and cried my heart out, knowing that I would choose adoption. I asked of God one other thing that day.

"If I do this, please … let there be a profound purpose in it. I don't know if I can make a covenant with you, but if I can, let it be this ~ that You will use this in my life."

Little did I know that at that very moment BreakThrough was conceived.

BreakThrough, which began as a small whispered prayer from the breaking heart of a fifteen-year-old girl, is now a non-profit organization which stands to explore, unite, and nurture the spirits and hearts of those traveling adoption's journey.

Ten years in the making, BreakThrough will emerge as a live two-day event in San Diego California, in the summer of 2002.

    • BreakThrough is for adoptive families, adoptee's, birth parents, their families and friends, as well as those considering adoption. We believe that it is crucial to encourage and welcome our families and friends so they can gain a clearer understanding of how our lives are influenced and changed by adoption. Many of our friends and family members may want to support us, encourage us, and even help us but simply don't know how. BreakThrough will provide individuals and their families the opportunity to explore attitudes and emotions, allow them to share their stories with others, and equip them with essential and factual information that will support them through the many facets of adoption. We need to validate our families and friends as they also are affected by our choices.
    • Equally ~ BreakThrough is also for adoption professionals, therapists, and others in adoption fields who are passionate about adoption and the health and welfare of all those involved.

There is no single platform for BreakThrough. However you are affected by adoption… you will find a speaker, a workshop, and many others just like you. BreakThrough is for those who are seeking answers and information as well as understanding, validation, and support. Our aim is to seek out the heart and spirit of many of the issues each of us face, and to encourage individuality.

    • From speaker Marlou Russel Ph.D., author of Adoption Wisdom, to workshop host Karen Deluca, adoptee and president of Adoption Forum, to Meri Crouley, founder of "Women of Power," to Jennifer Spaeth, adoptee in reunion and birth mother in an open adoption, and many, many more, you will be embraced by the knowledge that you are not alone, and that you, as an individual are important. There will be live entertainment, as well as many fun activities for the whole family to enjoy.
    • BreakThrough will concurrently host a two-day trade show where non-profits, organizations, businesses, agencies, and individuals will provide attendees with information, on their products and services. Any group or individual that has a positive influence in today's adoption are welcomed.
    • We are currently seeking Volunteers, Speakers, Workshop Hosts, Musicians, Sponsors.

BreakThrough is unique because we plan to incorporate, explore, and nurture the very personal, core elements of what each of us bring, individually, spiritually, and emotionally to our adoptions. The strength of our Spirits and our Journey towards Wholeness.

Where voices are heard and hearts are united.

Where experience and spirit meet as one.

Where we begin to know ourselves in ways that allow us to understand one another.

Where the force of unity harnesses a great compassion.

Where we are no longer defined by our roles, but by who we are in them.
