Your First Christmas
by Tom FisherIt's Christmas Day, Two thousand and two
And my thoughts are directed towards China, to you.
I want you to know I love you my dear,
And can't wait to hold you sometime next year.
Have you heard the story about Christ's birth,
Of God's incarnation upon this earth?
He was born in a manger, a bed made of hay,
Perhaps you were born that very same way.
Cousin Lani wondered if you had a tree,
I said it would be a surprise to me.
For most folks in China would probably say,
That Christmas is just one more winter's day.
Did they sing you a song of angels on high,
With shepherds below and sheep standing by?
Or did you just hear the usual sounds,
Of other kids crying, the staff on their rounds.
Was there a present that you could see,
Gift wrapped with a bow, stuck under the tree?
The tradition of giving was started back then,
When Jesus was visited by Three Wise Men.
And now I've told you just part of the story,
When God's son arrived in all of His glory.
And that's why we celebrate this time of the year,
It's Christmas Day, my heart's filled with cheer.
But my cheer turns to sadness as I think of you,
Your first Christmas on earth without us two.
My eyes are now blurred, as these thoughts I write down,
I can't wait to see you and lose this sad frown.
Next year will be different, a day filled with glee,
Cause Sarah will be here upon my knee.
I'll sing you some songs, you'll unwrap some toys,
I'll tell you the story that brings Christmas joys.
So good bye just for now, I'll talk to you later,
Next Christmas at our house will be so much greater.
As I close out this moment, one last thing I'll say,
God bless you my daughter on your first Christmas Day.
