The best toys to keep children occupied while traveling will be those that involve you as well, allow you to create stories with or without a lot of language, and are not limited to a narrow age range. If your child is coming from an orphanage, buying more than one will allow you to leave some for other children.

1) Magnetic Sketch Pads
These classics are just as fascinating today as they were when my kids were young. Magna Doodle and Etch-a-Sketch are the most well-known, and are excellent choices for children age 2 and up. Be sure to read manufacturers' warnings about small parts on some models.

2) Hand Puppets
Tell your stories with hand puppets of all descriptions. These simple puppets are for children age 2 and up, and some are available as "puppet books" - changing magically from books to puppets. Use your imagination, and encourage your child to do so as well.

3) Finger Puppets
Finger puppets are great fun, and most are accompanied by a stuffed animal or book with which you and your child can create stories or follow along with simple story lines. Age 2 and up.

4) Pop-Up Books
These books are great teaching tools because they're so much fun. Topics include ABCs, colors, numbers, animals, and others easily understood by children.

5) "The First Thousand Words in Russian"
Adopting parents have found this book to be an excellent tool for the transition period since it includes language help for adults and themes for stories that parents and children can develop together.
