Harry's journey on the Internet brought him here. He and Alicia read articles, talked and asked questions in our chat room and forums, and Harry, Alicia, and I became *friends* the way many do on the Net - semi-anonymously and at a distance.

Using information he found at the site, Harry signed up for the state's Confidential Intermediary (CI) program. In the meantime, he, Alicia, and I continued to correspond.

Improbable Moves

At the end of 2001, I was looking for a place to live in order to do some background work on a project. My Internet friends, Alicia and Harry Bergen, helped me find just the place I was looking for, and it was perfect! While it was being painted, I stayed with the Bergens in their home. At dinner, we would talk about any news that had come in from the CI about Harry's search, and try to come up with ideas of our own. To make a long story short, we located all of Harry's siblings (his parents had died) before the CI - and the reunion has been a wonderful success.

My new place was fine - but had no laundry facilities. The local laundromat became a frequent stop and, as in many small towns, was also where I met a lot of new people - and of course, told them about the site.

One day, there was a knock at my door. One of my laundromat acquaintances was standing there with a young man. Could I possibly help with an adoption search?

I don't do searches.

Oh, but couldn't I just take a look?

The young man, it turned out, lived across the street from me with his wife and children. He had been adopted as a newborn. His name was Joe Magnus.

In the year since then, Joe has reconnected with his birth family - and yes, he does have siblings. And I've moved - to a larger place that can accommodate my washer and dryer, so I don't go to the laundromat any more. My landlord lives across the country, but he and his wife will be coming for a visit soon. He was also adopted as an infant, grew up in this small town, and is interested in searching for his birth family. And his name is Joe Magnus... another one!

Joe Magnus... his story was the spark that ignited Alicia's search, and Harry's search... that brought us together on the Internet... that brought me to a small, rural town in Illinois... that resulted in one Joe Magnus reconnecting with his birth family... and who knows where the second Joe Magnus's search will take us!

All names, except mine, have been changed to protect family privacy. But Joe Magnus (1) and Joe Magnus (2) do have the same real name!
