Starting an Adoption-Related Home Business
Use your talent to fill a need.
When Yassin Young and her husband traveled to Cambodia to adopt their daughter, Yamisha, one item on their list of things to buy was a Cambodian flag. And it was the one thing they were unable to find. On their return to the states, her husband asked her to make just one flag. Although it sounded foolish to her, she set out for the local fabric store to find material. The only fabric she could find in the right colors was fleece - and although the quality wasn't as good as she would have liked, she bought it. Her husband helped by cutting out the pieces necessary to create a flag blanket, and Yassin sewed it together, painting her daughter's name and adoption date at one corner.
One photograph shared with her agency's group was how it all started. Yassin says, "My email was blowing up. Just about everyone wanted one. The news spread to the CAL list (
CambodiaAdoptList) and they all wanted one."
And so Yammi Wear was born.
Today, Yassin's business is flourishing, and she has expanded Yammi Wear to include flag pillows to match the blankets, patriotic clothing, snugglies, vests and more, for just about every country. She has also made a substantial financial commitment from her profits to her daughter's Cambodian orphanage, and to other programs to benefit orphans.
We sat down with Yassin and talked about her business.
