Sing Me A Song Of Adoption

A-D-O-P-T-E-D... Find out what it means to me... No, that's another song, but the emotion of individual adoption experiences can be found in songs to suit all tastes, from heavy metal to country. Whether you prefer emotion-laden ballads or cynical humor, there's something for everyone.

"A Mother's Prayer"
Complete lyrics to Randy Moore's song about relinquishment from his Watercolor album.

"All My Life"
Jim Witter's country song about relinquishment and reunion is available on his album by the same name. Listen to a clip and order from his Web site.

Family Garden
John McCutcheon's album of songs for children include "Happy Adoption Day." Listen to clips. (This song was the inspiration for the book of the same name.)

"Heaven in the Dark"
Adoptee Neal Coty's Chance and Circumstance album includes this and other cuts about adoption. Listen to a clip from the song.

"Little Green"
In 1967, Joni Mitchell wrote a song about her experience as a birthmother, and it was released on her Blue album in 1971. Complete lyrics can be found here (scroll down), or listen to a clip from the CD.

Favorites



Members of our community share songs with lyrics that speak to them individually. Some are about actual adoption experiences, others simply reflect what we feel.

One particular favorite - a real tear-jerker - is a song by Michael McLean titled "From God's Arms to My Arms to Yours." Lyrics - Sound clip. This is the song Marie Osmond sang on the Donny & Marie show about adoption.

Steven Curtis Chapman is another favorite songwriter who has written a song about his daughter's adoption from China. The song lyrics and music are not posted on his site, but check the discography for other songs like "When Love Takes You In."
