Ric Seaberg Sings Adoption
You Are My Folks from the CD "Regards from the Roombar"One of the songs on Ric Seaberg's CD, "Regards from the Roombar," is
You Are My Folks, a song about adoption. When I discovered that Seaberg had written the song himself, I asked how that came to be, thinking he might be telling of his own adoption experience.
He said, "Sometimes songs write themselves. I suppose there is some of me in there, the folks I wish I'd had, my observations of adopted friends' struggles, the fact that my folks are both gone, etc. Songwriters act as scribes occasionally, and I guess that's the story of the writing of this song."
However Seaberg came to write the song, this Portland, Oregon-based singer/songwriter has managed to capture what many adoptees feel, and what adoptive parents hope to mean to their children.
Lyric excerpt from You Are My Folks I knew when I was small I'd have to make it on my own
When Daddy went to jail and Mama sat there stoned
So I bounced around some families and wound up here with you
I never will forget the day my travelin' days were through
And when the social worker left I saw the tears form in your eyes
And as my heart went back together, it was then I realized
You are my folks, you are my mother and my dad
You signed up for life so I am sure you want me bad
You are my folks, you are the parents I adore
Well heaven's on the watch and I am grateful to the core.Seaberg's music is also a favorite of NPR's (National Public Radio) popular "Car Talk" radio show. One of his songs,
Didn't Say I Love You Right, appears on the "Car Talk Car Tunes Vol.1" CD, and another,
We Talk About Cars, will be featured on Volume 2.
Seaberg lives in the Portland area with his wife, Marie (who, he says, actually listens with interest to his songs before he records them with the band), and step-son Blaine. He warns, "never, ever, attempt to play Trivial Pursuit against my 23 year old son Blaine if it has anything to do with Motown Records." He also has two daughters and five grandchildren.
Portland's own mighty "Axe-God" Tim Ellis performs on all Seaberg's CDs.
