I Have Many Dreams - Alison Peck

Part 2: High School Challenges

Now on to Hackettstown High School. When I got to High school, math was not my favorite thing. I hated it! When I got to High school I found a teacher that really knew how to teach math to students with disabilities. Her name is Mrs. Ghachem.

She is an expert at math and she has been a real inspiration. She prepared and helped me with my math skills.

It really paid off because when I got to the eleventh grade I took the state mandatory test. The test scores came back and I passed the math, and it was my highest score. I was in disbelief when I found out and I was ready to scream, which I did. I wanted to jump but instead I ran and told Mrs. Ghachem and she said, "Get out... you have to be kidding." Because I passed the test, I met my goal and have been totally mainstreamed in all my classes for one year.

I have been very active in my years in High School. I have been on the Chess Club for four years and have been active in the Hackettstown Crime Prevention Committee. I also participated in the Mock Trial Club.

I also attended my first prom when I was in the eleventh grade. I took a Limousine and had a very nice time.

My future...

My goal is only one. It is my dream. I would like to get some type of degree in the field of special education. I may not get a PHD in Special Education but I want to be able to offer something in the field. I got this idea from my mom when we started talking about school and how I would like to work in special education. I would like to try a career in advocating for other kids who do not know how to get their needs met.

That is right, I would like to be like Mrs. Mahony, my high school case manager. Mrs. Mahony has been very helpful to me and by going to her every week, she has helped me deal with issues and helped me reach my goals in my IEP.

One of my goals in my education goal plan was to work with Employment Pathways to explore careers and gain work experiences.
