2Losing an Adoption- Don't believe everything you read in the paper.
High profile court rulings removing a child from an adoptive placement and returning him/her to biological parents are a tiny percentage of adoptions, and generally occur because attorneys or agencies have not fully pursued termination of parental rights.
- Every state has different laws regarding time involved in termination.
These can range from several hours after the child's birth to several months.
- Keep a positive mental attitude.
When an adoption falls through, it may simply mean there's a better opportunity in the future.
More on losing an adoptionThe Homestudy- It's not about your house.
Decades ago, the homestudy started as a way to confirm that the home was appropriate for a child. Today, the homestudy is about people.
- It's not about being perfect.
Social workers are looking for people who are prepared to be parents, who know how to solve problems, who are loving, and who have a sense of humor.
More on preparing for the homestudyFostering to AdoptingChoosing to start as foster parents
may lead to adoption and may not.
- Understand the risks going in.
The child placed with you as a foster parent may never become available for adoption.
- Love is always possible.
You are providing a safe haven for a child, even if only for a short time, and your love will add to the child's life.
- Let go with love.
More on fostering to adoptingAnd now, here's Rosie!Perhaps the most awaited moments of the show where those where Rosie gave us glimpses into her own experiences.
- She has adopted three times: son Parker, daughter Chelsea, and son Blake.
- She adopted three different ways, the first through an adoption attorney in New Jersey. (She did not comment on how the other two adoptions were handled, just that all there were done differently.)
- She did not meet the birth parents of her two older children, and did meet her younger son's birth mother.
- Acknowledging her wealth, she insisted her attorney / agency provide all financial assistance to her children's birth parents that the law allows.
- She has been licensed as a foster parent in Florida (yes, she took the MAPP course) and will welcome her first foster child this summer.
Not Just TalkAs with other recent celebrity adoption television programs, pictures of children available for adoption through the foster care system were displayed. Most shows heavily promote adoption of these children, while program participants are celebrities who have adopted only infants.
This show not only included parents of kids adopted from foster care - kids who were born HIV+ or drug-addicted, and older kids, but also ended with Rosie's own announcement of her plans to foster parent - a departure from other shows where celebrities are quick to encourage
others to foster parent or adopt from the foster care system, but who don't do it themselves.
