Freebies for Adopting Parents
Adopting parents often feel at a disadvantage when it comes to obtaining the many free samples, discounts, and coupons for baby- and child-related products that are readily available to parents expecting in the biological way.
Web-savvy adopting parents will usually make the various companies' Web sites their first stop, however, these can present difficulties.
Signing up for new baby product samples and coupons at most company Web sites means giving a due date. Many adopting parents don't have this information, and many are adopting children who may still need diapers, formula, and baby foods, but who will not be newborns.
As one woman remarked after signing up at a company site, "They want a due date... which I, of course don't have, so I made a date up. Now I am getting all kinds of pregnancy updates... and throwing them away."
There are solutions.
- 800 Phone Numbers - These can be obtained from the company Web site. Make a toll-free call to the company and explain that you are adopting. Customer service people at baby products companies are very accommodating... they want your business!
- Your Pediatrician - One of the first things adopting parents do before placement (see The Joy of Waiting) is find a pediatrician. Your pediatrician will know you're adopting, and has a number of product samples and coupons that can be made available to you - but remember to ask!
- Hospitals - If you are adopting a newborn and visit the hospital following delivery, ask a nurse about new parent packages, which can include diaper bags, samples of diapers and formula, and other items.
More Great Deals Links in the right-hand column will take you to more resources for freebies and discounts, and a reminder: don't ignore the freebies from pregnancy resources. There's information that can be very useful to those adopting a newborn or infant.
