Adoption Travel Essentials
There's a fine line between packing light and taking "enough" of everything you'll need for yourself, and your child/ren on the trip home. The mantra is "pack light (weight), pack dark (clothes)". Be sure to consult with your agency, travel experts, and parents who have been there for items specific to the country or area, and here are some recommendations to make sure you have the basics covered.
Child Carriers and Slings If you are adopting a baby or toddler, one of these lightweight travel carriers or slings will be a great choice. Look for a hands-free model that holds your child securely while you reach for a toy, hand over tickets, or pay for a cup of coffee in the airport.

Child Carriers & Slings For Your Child The newness of your relationship and the excitement of traveling may mean that your child won't sleep much. When buying toys and books in advance, select those that will allow you to participate with your child. If you are adopting internationally, keep in mind the language difference, and remember that your child's chronological age may be greater than her/his developmental age.

Travel Toys & Books Luggage Rule of thumb on your large pieces: one bag for each adult, one for your child. But traveling abroad to adopt means you'll have important documents, and possibly a large amount of cash. These will need to be carried safely and stay with you at all times. Depending on the age of your child, you may also need to carry diapers and other baby items. Make smart choices for safety and convenience.

Travel Bags Record the Moment You'll want to save every moment, so don't forget a camera or two! Still cameras, digital cameras, and camcorders will mark the steps of your journey from beginning to end, and a journal will add the words, and keep track of people and places. Instant cameras are great for taking photos you can leave with hosts, orphanage staff, and others.
Personal Care Items Personal care items like a hair dryer, sewing kit, laundry kit, medical kit, and electrical converter and adaptors for any small appliances are useful and often necessary. As always, you'll want them to be small and lightweight, while meeting your needs.
