Adoption Has Its Grinches Too
Every belle down in Belleville liked children a lot,
but not every belle could take care of her tot.
With regret, with remorse, with prayers sent above,
some babes were entrusted to others to love.
And these loving parents oft thought of the belle
and the beau down in Belleville who'd said their farewell
to the child in their families, who made their hearts glow,
and sent thanks into Belleville, to belle and to beau.
But up in the house overlooking the town
the gloating Grinch-parent stared down with a frown.
This child was her own now! No belle and no beau
would intrude on her turf, in her thoughts, oh no no!
"What kind of a belle would abandon her child?
Be she poor, be she sick, she must be reviled.
And try to tell
me what to do as a parent
(which surely is what belle would do)! Well, she daren't!"
"I am my child's mama, and let's be quite clear:
I'm mama and no belle will be mentioned here!
She
won't go to Belleville, will
not ask to see
who she looks like, and talks like, how she came to be."
"She's mine and she'll be mine for all of her years
and that belle down in Belleville can just dry her tears
and go on with her life, forget we exist.
What fools are these folks who insist and persist."
"I'll protect her and guard her so she'll never know
the facts of her past: that this belle and beau
were not able to parent, even considered abortion!
And to think I should thank them. For what? It's extortion!"
