Bio:
Ingrid Bergman was 2 years old when her mother died, and 12 when her father died, leaving her an orphan. Her first guardian, an aunt, died within a few months of her father's death. She then went to live her an uncle who had guardianship.

She studied at Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm. Her first film role, the Swedish film "Landskamp" in 1932, was was uncredited. In 1934 she started getting roles and gained attention, and in 1936, American producer David O. Selznick offered her a Hollywood contract.

Bergman made a lasting impression on movie audiences during the 1940s. She started in films like "Gaslight" (1944), "Casablanca" (1942), and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1943). Her last role was "A Woman Called Golda" (1982), a highly acclaimed television miniseries. Of additional interest to the adoption community, Bergman portrayed missionary and adoptive parent Gladys Aylward in the film "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness" (1958).

In 1949, Bergman met and fell in love with Italian director, Roberto Rossellini. She had a baby with him before her divorce from husband Dr. Peter Lindstrom was final, and for a time, this relationship ended her American movie career. American audiences were shocked by the relationship, and she was even publicly denounced in the United States Senate.

Bergman and Rossellini married in 1950 and had twin daughters, Isabella Fiorella and Isotta Ingrid. The marriage was annulled in 1957.

Bergman was accepted back into the American movie industry and made films until shortly before her death. She also appeared on the stage and in television productions.
