Adopting Natasha: Independent Adoption from Ukraine

Journal of an Independent Adoption From Ukraine

01-Dec-2000
Thursday was a bit of a blur. Our translator got up early to go into the city. Our driver, Slava, knows a woman who knows a judge who knows a clerk in OUR judge's building. Our judge has never processed an adoption before and he had some issues with my adoption. Ukrainians seem to highly value face-to-value. Irene in the adoption center, my driver Slava and the inspector think that I am too young to adopt. My mother says to enjoy being called too young while I can. 32 years old is young????

I bought Natasha a dress, pants with a shirt and slippers. The clothing was sized 26 and 26 cm. I have no idea what this translated to but based on my 3 year old petite niece, I believe Natasha is a 4T. She loved the clothing and slippers. She asked "for me". I put on the dress and slippers and she walked down the hallway showing off the clothing.

We also brought Natasha's roommates the goodie bags. I learned a few of their names. The one boy in the room is Roma. And there is a girl that looks like my clone called Elaine who is 12. The older girl who translates for us is Luba and is 16 years old. We gave the older girl scarves and bracelets. The younger girls got crayons and candy. Roma got pen, soap, shampoo. And all the children got a toothbrush and a small beany baby. The children loved the toothbrushes. Roma asked for toothpaste, which we bought him today. Natasha got her own present but she wanted Roma's soap, shampoo and toothbrush. I promised she would get her own.

Also we brought her 2 small children books which she loved. She also dragged my book of pictures out of my bag and showed it to the nurse. She is just too cute. She asked our translator when she would go with us.

Got to run.

I don't have a way to send a picture of her yet.
