Journal of an Independent Adoption From Ukraine

29-Nov-2000
I arrived in Kharkiv (second largest city in Ukraine) on Tuesday morning and we went to the orphanage which is 22 km outside of Kharkiv.

I met and talked with the orphanage director, Tamara. She told me that I should see 4 different children, but the girl was perfect for me. Natasha was 3.5 years old and was very determined (stubborn). I had to go to the hospital to met Natasha because she had a cold. Any sick child is sent to the hospital to keep other orphanage children from getting sick.

I took one look at Natasha and knew Tamara was correct. She was my daughter. I fed her a cracker which she ate. (I had a small package of cheese crackers like you get from the vending machine.) I gave her the second cracker and she grabbed the package from me.... very bold move. She is going to be a hand full. (grin) And she loves chocolate.

I will have to visit her at the hospital until Monday when she moves back to the orphanage. And I will not be able to get a court appointment to adopt her until next week. So I will be doing a little sightseeing. This is a beautiful city.

I want to try shopping for clothes for her today. She might be a 3T. I will have to see.
