Adopting Natasha: Independent Adoption from Ukraine

Journal of an Independent Adoption From Ukraine

27-Nov-2000
We (with my mother and friend) arrived in Kiev after a very long flight. I received a referral to a 3 year old boy in Kharkiv and will be getting on the train tonight. I hope to see the boy Tuesday morning.

Sunday

We were the last thru customs and the custom official didn't seem to care much about us. I was first in line and Mom heard something in my voice and came forward to where I was standing. The custom guy said, "back, only one". Mom stepped back. I leaned over the counter and looked him in the eyes. I said "Mama". He grinned and said "oh mama". We finally got out of the custom area and tried to find the translator. I went and changed some money and asked the woman at the information booth how I used the phone. It required a special card and didn't take money. She was going to let me use her phone when the translator and driver found Mom, Jannie and me.

I am so tired.

Monday

Saw a bull terrier on the street today walking his owner. The dog was pulling very hard on the leash.

Flight of stairs up to the Ukrainian adoption center. This is a government office. Seven flights of stairs? And the hallway was dark. There was suppose to be 45 families but only 30 showed up.

Irene was showing me pictures of children to visit. She highly suggested this "funny" boy. She asked "Why adopt a child while you are so young. You can still get married and have children."

I go to see the funny boy tomorrow. It is a 12 hour train ride to see him. There are a couple of available boys and one shifty eyed girl at his orphanage. Dima is picking us up to go to the train station at 2100 tonight.

If the boy is my child, I don't know what I will name him. I could use Kendrick for a boy. The child would be named after a very strong woman who traveled the moral path. Or I can keep his current name.

My child.. soon I will find you. I hope that you won't hate me for taking you from familiar people and places.

I want to write more about the adoption center but all I can think about is "where is my child?".

I will update you when I know more.
