Adopting from Azerbaijan
Factsheet Who Can Adopt? In order to comply with U.S. Immigration & Naturalization requirements:
- The adoptive or prospective adoptive parent must be an American citizen;
- If the adoptive or prospective adoptive parent is married, his or her spouse must also be a party to the adoption;
- If the adoptive or prospective adoptive parent is single, he or she must be at least 25 years of age.
Patti adds that according to her information (although this is not listed on the
State Deparment factsheet), single men may not adopt from Azerbaijan.
The ChildrenPatti's experience has been that the children are healthier and more stimulated than those she came in contact with during her Russia adoption experience. Children are of all ages, from 9 months of age up to 16, from a variety of backgrounds, based on the country's population:
- Ethnic groups: Azeri 90%, Dagestani 3.2%, Russian 2.5%, Armenian 2%, other 2.3% (1998 est.)
- Religions: Muslim 93.4%, Russian Orthodox 2.5%, Armenian Orthodox 2.3%, other 1.8% (1995 est.)
Forward... but with caution For those considering adopting from Azerbaijan, keep in mind that programs are new. The
U.S. Consular Office in Baku (.pdf format) is the best source for accurate information since it is responsible for assuring that all adoptions meet Azeri and U.S. legal conditions.
