We have had so many benefits and privileges in our lives: stable, loving families; education; a comfortable and attractive house in the country. We value our beautiful surroundings, but we're not ostentatious. We don't own expensive cars, but we do have a fast computer that our child will delight in learning to use.
Our home & gardenWe are a family that appreciates and celebrates differences. Samuel, our 23-year-old, was born with cerebral palsy, which makes him unable to use one hand, and has given him a limp, as well as learning disabilities. Because of his disability, lots of kids made fun of him when he was growing up. Stu has a wonderful ability to love and accept Samuel just the way he is. Samuel is doing extraordinarily well now: he works in a local Longs drugstore and takes classes at the junior college. Stu also knows what it is like to be an outsider. He grew up as one of the few Jews in Bismarck, North Dakota, and experienced prejudice from the dominant Christian culture. In his early twenties, Stu spent two years as a VISTA volunteer working in African American communities.
We do celebrate our differences. Each year, we celebrate both Jewish and Christian holidays in our home. We have a large Passover dinner and service, where we remember the biblical Exodus and celebrate God as the liberator from slavery and oppression. At Christmas, we decorate the tree cut from our land, and read the advent scriptures, lighting the candles each week. We both share a spirituality that honors and respects the awe and wonder of God's love and creation. We want to share that love and wonder with our child.

The family on this webpage is working with Pact, An Adoption Alliance, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide the highest quality adoption services to children of color. We would be happy to give you more information about them and adoption in general - please feel free to call us (ask for Marta Barton, one of our Adoption Coordinator and a birth parent herself who placed her first son for adoption in 1991) at (800) 750-7590.
Our primary client is the child. In order to serve the child, we address the needs of all the child's parents, by advising families facing a crisis pregnancy and by offering lifelong education to adoptive families and birth families on matters of race and adoption. Our goal is for every child to feel wanted honored and loved, a cherished member of a strong family with proud connections to the rich cultural heritage that is his or her birthright. Pact was incorporated in 1991 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
