Pre-Adoption Travel Preparation list
Before a parent(s) leave for the country of origin, they may require preparation for travel. Parents may need to bring medications and household items for basic child care. Pre-adoption travel preparation consultation is available. A preparation list is provided which includes some of the most common pediatric medical problems and recommended management strategies. Prescriptions for antibiotics and other medications are provided. Urgent medical advice when abroad is available by phone 24 hours a day.
Antibiotics
Amoxicillin (prescription- do not add bottled water until ready to use/111 cc for 150 ml bottle)
Bacitracin or Neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment
Conjunctivitis (prescription for Tobrex 2 drops in each eye three times a day for one week)
Little red bumps and other skin problems
Hydrocortisone 1% cream or ointment
T-gel shampoo (Neutrogena)
Nystatin cream 1% for diaper rash (prescription) apply three times per day for one week
Aquaphor or Cetaphil cream for eczematous skin (twice a day)
Dove soap (unscented)
Creeping critters (scabies)
Elimite cream 5% (prescription). Apply from the head down, leave on 10 hours over night, wash off in morning.
Antipyretics, analgesics
Tylenol (infant 80mg/0.8ml or children's Tylenol 160mg/5ml)
Motrin (100 mg/5ml) dose based on weight;
Tylenol dose 10 mg x kg of weight every 6-8 hours
(eg child weighs 8 kg: multiply 10 x 8= 80 mg which is one infant dropperful of tylenol). To convert pounds to kilograms, divide the pounds by 2.2
(eg. 22 pounds divided by 2.2 = 10 kg).
Allergy medication
Benadryl 12.5 mg per 5 ml (1mg X kg of weight every 6-8 hours)
Coughs and colds
Triaminic, Dimetapp, Naldecon, Pediacare (consult with physician for dose)
Saline nose drops (Ocean, Nasal, Ayr) each nostril every few hours
Bulb aspirator
Diarrhea and vomiting
KAO Lectrolyte packets to be mixed with 8 oz. of water (plain, bubble gum, grape)
Miscellaneous paraphernalia
Rectal thermometer, digital thermometer
K-Y Jelly
Infant/child medicine dropper marked in ml or cc
Formula as a powder (milk or soy)
Rice cereal
Nipples of all kinds
Pacifier
Playtex nursers with lots of refill bags
Scissors for infant fingernails and for enlarging nipple openings
Diapers (disposable) size based on weight of baby/child-8-12 changes per day
Baby spoon and bowl
Sippy cup
Prune juice for constipation
Snugglie or Bjorn for carrying the baby on the chest or back
Tape recorder with children's music, Children's books
Cotton garments all pre-washed before travel
Bulb aspirator for nose or ear syringe can be used as nose aspirator
Water Babies sunscreen (seasonal), tongue depressor for medical at end of the trip
Umbrella stroller
