God's Wings by Courtney Frey (Birthmother)
An article in National Geographic several years ago provided a penetrating picture of God's wings. After a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park, forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno's damage.
One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the base of a tree. Somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he gently struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother's wings. The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise. She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies. Then the blaze had arrived and the heat had scorched her small body, the mother had remained steadfast. Because she had been willing to die, those under the cover of her wings
would live.
"He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find
refuge." (Psalm 91:4).
Being loved this much should make a difference in your life.
Remember the One who loves you, and then be different because of it.
She fought a blaze of fear and panic, though she knew what had started the fire. Of course, she didn't mean to do it, it had just been a flicker of need and longing. Then, without warning the blaze overpowered her. After the panic released her and her body adapted to the scorching heat of decision, she realized there was only one thing to do. The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, held her offspring at the base of her heart, and covered it with her wings of faith. She could have ran safely away, she could have abandoned her baby or left it to die. When the blaze arrived and the heat threatened her very soul, the mother remained steadfast.Because she had been willing to do what was best, the child under the wings of its mother lived and was blessed with another mother whose wings would continue to protect it. “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge.”
(Psalm 91:4) Remember the One who loves you, and then be different because of it. It was not instinct when the man walked to the Roman Temple that day. He knew exactly what He was doing and what would happen. He chose to go forward because He loved the people and wanted them to believe in that love. He stood judged by sinners and scorned by rulers. Beaten and tormented he was forced to walk a long hard road carrying the weight of others burdens. At the hilltop, his hands and feet were nailed to the cross. When it was raised he hung between two thieves, though he'd never committed a single injustice his whole life. Yet covered in blood and writhing in pain he still loved the people and believed that his choice would mean life for them. As he cried out, feeling abandoned, he realized that even a choice made in sacrifice and for the right reasons is not easy.He was alone.Only a few understood, only a few cared. Not once did he question if it was worth it. And still, thousands and thousands of years later, this man is remembered for that very thing. His story is a part of each of us, some call it instinct, but those of us who know better … call it love. A great man died that day so that the people might know … real love is worth dying for.Real love is sacrificing everything so that others might find happiness. Real love is staying true to your heart even as you face judgment and torment. Birth mothers know this all too well.So did the mother bird in her story of saving the lives of her babies. But perhaps these acts of selfless love come from a deeper place than simple choice.I can't help but wonder if that day when Christ, with his arms spread on the cross, knew that for century's to come the people would in fact remember. Not only that but the people would seek refuge in Him and gain courage by His example. The courage to love. The courage to sacrifice. The courage to be different. They would know, no matter what wrongs they've committed, there is a God with wings wide enough to span centuries of sinful blazes. They would know the only thing required of them is to remember, to believe, and to act in the same love that first loved them. Even birth mothers who don't know the story and even birth mothers who don't believe in it still cannot avoid how they have been a part of it. We took refuge We found peace We loved We sacrificed We will always remember And will be forever different because of it. “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge.” (Psalm 91:4) “Remember the One who loves you, and then be different because of it.”
